Run a portfolio review in 30 minutes

Run a portfolio review in 30 minutes

Monthly portfolio review is a habit, not a project. Thirty minutes once a month beats a four-hour deep dive twice a year.

The three views

Open Atlas and look at three things, in order:

1. Health index (10 min)

/portfolio-health-index gives you a single score and a trend line. If it dropped since last month, scroll down to see which applications pulled it down. Note the top three offenders.

2. Capability coverage (10 min)

/platform/applications → Capabilities tab. Scan for gaps (capabilities with no applications) and overlap (capabilities with more than three applications). Each gap is a risk; each overlap is a consolidation opportunity.

3. Decisions log (10 min)

/platform/decisions. Read the last 30 days of ADRs. Is there a pattern? Too many reversals? Decisions being made without context?

The three calls

After scanning, make three calls:

  1. One application to investigate further — the worst health-index offender
  2. One capability to rationalize — the biggest overlap
  3. One decision to follow up on — the one that smells unfinished

Write them in your own notes. Next month, start by checking whether you closed them.

Why 30 minutes works

Short enough that you'll actually do it. Long enough to spot patterns. The discipline is more valuable than the depth.
